How to charge your EV during cold weather?

In News 0 comments

Probably most of you already know that cold weather can have a significant impact on battery charging and range for all vehicle types, including traditional gas-powered vehicles. At very low temperatures, electric vehicles lose some of their autonomy. Cold batteries can't charge as quickly or hold their charge as long. To help you reduce this kind of impact, we are going to explore how various methods can be utilized to minimize this challenge in this article.

Tips for EV charging in cold weather

  • Battery conditioning It means that you can preheat the battery and passenger cabin at a preset time. In this way, your car batteries will be warmed up to work more efficiently. Preconditioning allows you to depart comfortably with a fully charged and heated battery and cabin. It is recommended to gradually turn the dial so that the battery as a whole heats up and is ready to receive the entire flow of electricity.
  • Parking If you can choose for parking, a warmer place it's a better choice. Like a parking lot or a garage,  offers a distinct advantage in keeping your vehicle’s ambient temperature up. Keeping your vehicle in an area as close to 70°F as possible is optimal for charging.
  • Plan accordingly Please note that charging may take longer at lower temperatures. You will need more time for charging. You should also plan ahead and coordinate charging stations along your route if you are going for a long drive. The driving range might be affected by the cold weather.
  • Extra energy When it's cold outside, your BMS keeps a percentage of your battery's power in reserve to warm itself up. If you get stuck out in the cold due to an accident, a road closure, or any other event that can hold you up. You can then, for example, keep your car warmer for longer or use it to charge your phone if required.
